OH is o, p-directing while COOH is m-directing, therefore, both these groups direct the incoming group to the same position ie, meta-w.r.t.-COOH and ortho-w.r.t. OH group. Thus,

Both `CH_(3)` and `CH_(3)O` groups are electron-donating and o,p-directing but `CH_(3)O` group is a much stronger electron-donating group, therefore, `NO_(2)` group enters the o-position w.r.t. to the `CH_(3)O` group.

In `C_(6)H_(5)-overset(O)overset(||)C-O-C_(6)H_(5), C=O`, is electron withdrawing while O is electron-donating. Therefore, electrophilic substitution occurs in the benzene group attached to O-atom. Furthermore, due to steric hindrance at the O-position, the substitution mainly occurs at the p-position.
