The rate expression for the chemical reaction,
`2NO_2Cl rarr 2NO_3+Cl_2`,
is given as : Rate= `k[NO_2Cl]`
Propose a possible mechanism for the above reaction and give the order of the reaction.

Since the rate of the reaction depends only upon the cone, of `NO_2Cl`, one of the mechanism of the reaction max be proposed as follows:
`(i) NO_2Cl rarr NO_2+Cl` (slow)
(ii) `NO_2Cl +Cl rarr NO_2+Cl_2` (fast)
The first step is slow and therefore is rate controlling step. The rate law for the reaction is
Rate = `k [NO_2Cl]`
So that the order of reaction is one.
