What is the effect of exposure to radiation on the rate of a chemical reaction.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In general, the rate of chemical reactions does not depend upon exposure to radiation. However in case of phochemical reactions, the rate of chemical reaction also depends upon exposure to radiation, In case of such reactions, the rate of reaction increases on exposure to radiations. For example, phochemical decomposition of silaer bromide.
`2Ag Br(s) overset(hv)(rarr) + 2Ag(s) + Br_2 (g)`
Similarly reactions between `H_2`(g) and `Cl_2`(g) depends upon exposure to reactions
`H_2(g) + Cl_2(g) overset(hv)(rarr) 2HCl(g)`
