Arrange the following compounds in the increasing order of their boiling points :
`CH_(3)CHO, CH_(3)CH_(2)OH, CH_(3)OCH_(3), CH_(3)CH_(2)CH_(3)`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

All the given compounds have nearly the same molecular masses. Out of all these compounds, propane is non-polar and will have as such, lowest boiling point. Dimethyl ether is polar and as such will have a higher boiling point than propane. Ethanal, more polar than dimethyl ether will have a higher boiling point than dimethyl ether. Ethanol will have the highest boiling point due to H-bonding. Therefore, increasing order of boiling point is : `CH_(3)CH_(2)CH_(3) lt CH_(3)OCH_(3) lt CH_(3)CHO lt CH_(3)CH_(2)OH`
