Sodium bisulphite is used for the purification of aldehydes and ketones. Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

All aldehydes and only methyl ketones react with sodium bisulphite, `NaHSO_(4)` to give addition products which are crystalizing and water soluble.

These addition products can easily be decomposed back to give original aldehyde or ketone with dilute mineral acid or aqueous alkali.

Therefore, the reaction can be used in the purification and separation of aldehydes and methyl ketones from other compounds.
