A shunt is a small resistance connected in parallel across a galvanometer or any other instrument. Shunt allows only a small part of the current to flow through the galvanometer by acting as a bypass for the major portion of the current. As the resistance of a galvanometer is small, so if whole of the current flowing in a circuit, is allowed to pass through the galvanometer, it might get damaged. Thus, shunt saves the galvanometer from damage.
