Hydrogen is a combustible gas and oxygen...

Hydrogen is a combustible gas and oxygen is a supporter of combustion. Water contains both hydrogen and oxygen but it is used to existinguish fire. Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Hydrogen and oxygen are elements and have their characteristic properties. But water is a compound of hydrogen and oxygen combined together in a fixed ratio of 1:8 by mass. The properties of a compound are entirely different from those of its constituent atoms from which it is formed. Therefore, water has different properties than hydrogen and oxygen.
