The colour of the gas `:` The colour of the gas in both jars becomes the same ( light brown ) after a few minutes. Diffusion has taken place. Nitrogen dioxide particles will diffuse into the spaces between the hydrogen particles. At the same time, hydrogen particles will diffuse into the spaces between nitrogen dioxide particles. Eventually, each gas jar will contain a mixture of nitrogen dioxide and hydrogen gas.
