How does formation of alloys improve the properties of metals ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The homogeneous mixture of more than one metal or even metal and non-metal is known as alloy. It is prepared by melting the main constituting metal and then adding definite proportions of the other elements (metals or non-metals) also in the molten state. The molten mass is uniformly stirred and cooled to form a solid mass. This is known as alloy.
Certain properties of the metals such as lustre, malleability, ductility, resistance to action by air and moisture etc. can be improved by the addition of small amounts of other metals or even non-metals.
For example, pure gold (also called 24 carat gold) is very soft. It cannot be used for making jewellery. A small amount of silver or copper is mixed with it in order to improve its hardness, malleability and ductility. This is normally 22 carat gold and is used in making ornaments.
