Write a chemical test to distinguish between ethanol ad ethanoic acid.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(i) Sodium bicarbonate test : Take a small amount of both the compounds in two separate test tubes. Add a pinch of `NaHCO_(3)` to both. The compound which gives brisk effervescene due to evolution of `CO_(2)` must be ethanoic acid.
(ii) Alk. `KMnO_(4)` test : Take small amount of both the compound in two test tubes separately and add a little amount of alk. `KMnO_(4)` solution and heat. The compound which discharges the pink colour of `KMnO_(4)` must be an alcohol.
