How does the electronic configuration of an atom relate to its position in the Modern Periodic Table?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The electronic configuration of an atom helps us to predict the position of the atom in the periodic table.
(i) The number of the outermost shell corresponds to the period. For example, if the atom has second shell as the outermost shell, it belongs to second period and so on.
(ii) The numer of electrons in the outermost shell corresponds to group number in the periodic table.
