Hydrogen occupies a unique position in modern periodic table. Justify the statement.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Hydrogen resembles the elements of group IA (alkali metals) as well as the elements of group VIIA (halogens). For example, like alkali metals, hydrogen combines with halogens, oxygen and sulphur to form compounds having similar formulae,
`HCl, H_(2)O, H_(2)S`
`NaCl, Na_(2)O, Na_(2)S`
Like halogens it exists as diatomic `(H_(2), Cl_(2), Br_(2), "etc")` and combines with non-metals to form covalent compounds. Thus, hydrogen occupies a unique position in the periodic table.
