Why have detergents replaced soap as a washing agent ?

Detergents have replaced soap as a washing agent due to the following reasons :
(i) Synthetic detergents can father well even in hard water as unlike soaps, they do not form insoluble calcium or magnesium salts with hard water.
(ii). Syńthetic detergents can work well even in acidic water whereas soaps cannot be used in acidic medium.
