A cube of ice floats partly in water and partly in K.oil figure. Find the ratio of the volume of ice immersed in water to that in K.oil. Specific gravity of K.oil is 0.8 and that of ice is 0.9.

The correct Answer is:
A

`rho_w=1gm/cc, rho_(ice)=0.9g/mcc, rho_k=0.8gm/cc `
here ` v_(ice)=V_k+V_w`
`where V_k=` volume of ice inside horosene
`and V_w=` volume of ice inside water
So,` rho_(ice)xxrho_(ice)xxg=V_kxxrho_kxxg+V_wxxrho_wxxg`
`rarr (V_k+V_w)+xrho_(ice)=V_k+rho_k+V_w+rho_w`
`rarr (0.9)V_k+(0.9)V_w=(0.8)V_k+(0.1)xxV_w`
`rarr (0.1)V_w=0.1V_k`
`rarr V_w/V_k=1`
`rarr V_w: V_k=1:1`
