Two particles, each having a mass of 5 g and charge. `1.0 xx 10^(-7)` C, stay in limiting quilibrium on a horizontal. table with a separation of 10 cm between them. The coefficient of friction between each partcle and the table. is the same. Find the value of this coefficient.

Text Solution

The electric force on one of the particles due to
the other is
`F = ((9xx 10^9 Nm^2 C^(-2) xx (1.0x 10^(-7) C))^2 x 1/ (0.10m^2)
= 0009N
. The frictional force in limiting equilibrum
`f= mu xx(5x10^(-3)kg) x 9.8 ms^(-2)`
`=(0.049mu)N.`
As these two forces balance each other,
`0.049mu = 0.009`
0r, `mu=0.18.`
