Explain the role of Latin and Greek names in Biology.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The binomial nomenclature used for distinguishing the organisms have their roots in Latin or Greek. This is because when Carolus Linnaeus, the father of taxonomy, published his books, Latin was considered the common language of science and hence Linnaeus continued to use Latin and Greek for scientific names. These names serve as a common medium for biologists all over the world to recognise the species involved.
