On which quantity the escape velocity for earth does not depend on

A

mass of the earth

B

mass of the projectile

C

point of projection relative to the earth

D

gravitational constant

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
B

Potential energy = kinetic energy:
` + (GM_(e)m)/R = 1/2 mv_(e)^(2)`
Where m is mass of projectile, Me is mass of earth, `M_(e)` is gravitational constant, R is radius.
`v_(e) = sqrt((2GM_(e))/R_(e))`.
The above formula shows that escape velocity is independent of the mass of the projectile.
