Assertion (A): Thalassemia is passed on ...

Assertion (A): Thalassemia is passed on from parents to the progeny when both the partners are heterozygous (unaffected carrier) for the gene.
Reason( R): Production of `alphaandbeta` globin chain is affected in `alpha` Thalassemia and the `beta` Thalassemia.

A

Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A

B

Both A and Rare true but is not the correct explanation of A

C

A is true but R is false

D

A is false but R is true

The correct Answer is:
A

(1) The cause of the disease can be either mutation or deletion.
(2) The mutation results in reduced rate of synthesis of one of the globin chains (and chains) of haemoglobin.
(3) This results in the formation of abnormal haemoglobin molecules causing anaemia.
Thalassemia can be classified as:
(1) Thalassemia: In this the production of globin chain is affected. Two closely linked genes HBA1 and HBA2 on chromosome 16 of each parent controls Thalassemia.
(2) Thalassemia: in this the production of `beta` globin chain is affected. A single gene HBB on chromosome 11 of each parent controls `beta` Thalassemia.

If both the parents are carriers of autosomal r recessive disorder thalassemia , what are the chances of pregnancy resulting in an affected child

Sickle- cell anaemia is an autosome linked recessive trait that can be transmitted from parents to the offspring when both the partners are carrier for all the gene (or heterozygous ).The disease is controlled by a single pair of allele, Hb^(A) & Hb^(S) . Out of the three possible genotypes only homozygous individuals for HbS (Hb^(s) Hb^(s)) are lethal. Select the right option in which X,Y and Z are correctly identified

If both the parents are carriers for thalassemia which is an autosomal recessive disorder what are fthe chances of pregnancy resulting in an affected child

Assertion :-Sickle-cell anaemia is caused by the substitutin of glutamic acid by valine at the sixth position of the beat globin chain of the hemoglobin moecule. Reason :- It is due to the single base substatution at the sixth codon of the beta lobin gene from GUG to GAG.

Assertion : When yelow bodied, white eyed Drosophila females were hybridised with brown-bodied, red eyeed males , and F_(1) progeny was intercrossed, F_(2) ratio deviated from 9:3:3:1 Reason : When two genes in a dihybrid are on same chromosome, the proportion of parental gene combinations are much higher than the non-parental type
