Kolbe.s synthesis : When sodium salt of phenol (sodium phenoxide) is heated with carbon dioxide under pressure, a carboxylic group is introduced in the aromatic ring preferably at ortho position with respect to phenolic group. The sodium salt of o-hydroxybenzoic acid (sodium salicylate) formed, when treated with acid yields salicylic acid.
