Find the minimum thickness of a film whi...

Find the minimum thickness of a film which will strongly reflect the light of wavelength 589 nm. The refractive index of the material of the film is 1.25.

Text Solution

For strong reflection, the least optical path difference introduced by the film should be `lamda/2`. The optical path difference between the waves reflected from the two surfaces of the film is `2mud`. Thus, for strong reflection,
`2mud=lamda/2`
`or, d=lamda/(4lamda)=(589nm)/(4xx1.25)=118nm.

At what angle should a ray of light be incident on the face of a prism of refracting angle 60^(@) so that it just suffers total internal reflection at the other face? The refractive index of the material of the prism is 1.524.

A direct-vision prism is made out of three prisms, each with a refracting angle of phi=60^(@) , attached to each other as shown in Figure. Light of a certain wavelength is incident on the first prism. The angle of incidence is 30^(@) and the ray leaves the third prism parallel to the direction of incidence. To ensure almost 100 per cent transmittivity, photographic lenses are often coated with a thin layer of dielectric material. The refractive index of this material is intermediated between that of air and glass (which makes the optical element of the lens). A typically used dielectric film is MgF_(2)(n=1.38) . What should the thickness of the film be so that at the center of the visible speetrum (5500Å) there is maximum transmission.
