Stability of iso-butylene can be best explained by

A

Inductive effect

B

Mesomeric effect

C

Hyperconjugative effect

D

Steric effect

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
C

Because of hyperconjugation, the `CH_(3) - C` bond has some partial double bond character and consequently is shortened. Also, since hyperconjugation stabilises a molecule (through resonance), isobutylene, for example, should be more stable than .expected.. This has been found to be so, the observed heat of hydrogenation of isobutylene is less than the calculated value.
