Find out the oxidation state of sodium in `Na_(2)O_(2)`.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Let x be the oxidation state of Na in `Na_(2)O_(2) ` . Since `Na_(2)O_(2)` contains a peroxide linkage in which O has an oxidation state of -1 , therefore , `overset(x)(N)a_(2) overset(-1)(O_(2)) or 2x + 2 (-1) = 0` or x = + 1 .
Thus , the oxidation state of sodium in ` Na_(2)O_(2)` is +1.
