Explain why is sodium less reactive than potassium.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The ionization enthalpy `(Delta_(i) H_(1))` of potassium (419 kJ `mol^(-1)`) is less than that of sodium (496 kJ `mol^(-)`) or more precisely the standard electrode potential `(E^(@))` of potassium `(-2*925 V)` is more negative than that of sodium `(-2*714V)` and hence potassium is more reactive than sodium .
