Nitric acid is highly corrosive and a strong oxidising agent. To avoid accidents caused by possible breakage of glass containers during transportations, what other unbreakable containers can be used

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Nitric acid use can be safety transported in aluminium containers. The reasons being that Al becomes passive due to the formation of oxide layer on its surface. This oxide layer being impervious does not allow the acid to come in contact with the acid to come in contact with the metal . As a result, further action stops.

Primary and secondary alcohols are dehydrogenated by copper at 573 K to aldehydes and ketones respectively. In contrast tertiary alcohols are dehydrated to alkenes by heating with copper at 573 K. Similarly, primary alcohols are easily oxidised to form first an aldehyde and then a carboxylic acid while secondary alcohols are oxidised to ketones which are further oxidised to form a mixture of acids. Tertiary alcohols are oxidised with difficulty and with strong oxidising agents in acidic medium. They form first ketones and then acids. In the case of alcohols containing carbon-carbon double bond, some oxidising agents oxidise both double bond and OH group while other reagents donot affect C-Chond. The reagent which oxidises 1^(@) alcohol to aldehyde without affecting C=C double bond is

Aldehydes and ketones undergo nucleophilic addition reactions. With weak nucleophiles such as ammonia and its derivatives, (H_2 N-Z) , aldehydes and ketones react in weakly acidic medium to form compounds containing carbonnitrogen double bond with the elimination of water to form . Aldehydes can be easily oxidised to carboxylic acid on treatment with common oxidising agents like KMnO_4 K_2 Cr_2 O_7 , HNO_3 , etc. The carboxylic acid formed contain the same number of carbon atoms as the aldehydes. However ketones under drastic conditions with powerful oxidising agents undergo cleavage of C-C bond giving mixture of carboxylic acids having lesser number of C atoms than the original ketone. Write the reaction of acetone with semicarbazide.
