The correct statement (s) for orthoboric acid is/are

A

it behaves as a weak acid in water due to self ionization

B

acidity of its aqueous solution increases upon addition of ethylene glycol

C

it has a three-dimensional structure due to hydrogen bonding

D

it is a weak electrolyte in water

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
B, D

Orthoboric acid is a weak monobasic Lewis acid. It accepts a pair of electrons from `OH^(-)` ion of `H_(2)O` releasing a proton.

On adding ethylene glycol, it acidity increases

`H_(3)BO_(3)`, however, does not undergo self ionization to release a proton.

Further due to H-bonding , `H_(3)PO_(3)` is a planar molecule .Thus only option (b,d) correct.
