Stereoisomers which are non-superimposable mirror images of each other are called enantiomers while stereoisomers which are not mirror images of each other are called diastereomers. For example, tartaric acid exists in three stereoisomers forms I, II and III Structures I and II are non-superimposable mirror images of each other and hence are enantiomers. But structures I and III (or II and III) are not mirror images and hence are diasteromers.
