Predict the major product of the following reaction: `C_(6)H_(6)+(CH_(3))_(2)CHCH_(2)OH overset(H_(2)SO_(4))to`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In presence of conc. `H_2SO_4`, isobutyl alcohol first gives `1^@` carbocation (I) which then rearranges to the more stable `3^@` carbocation (II) by 1,2-hydride shift. Carbocation (II) then reacts with benzene to form tert-stable `3^@` carbocation (II) by 1,2-hydride shift. Carbocation (II) then reacts with benzene to form tert-butylbenzene.
