What will be the product obtained as a result of the following reaction and why ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

During F.C. reactions, carbocations are the intermediates. Therefore , `AlCl_3` first reacts with n-propyl chloride to form n-propyl cation. This being `1^@` is less stable and hence rearranges to the more stable `2^@` carbocation, i.e., isopropyl carbocation by an hydride shift. The isopropyl carbocation then reacts with benzene to form isopropylbenzene.
