Amniocentesis is an invasive, diagnostic prenatal taxt. It involves taking sample of amniotic fluid in order to examine foetal cells found in this fluid. The amniotic fluid extracted contains cells from the amnion and foetal skin, lungs and urinary tract. Amniocentesis is used to defect genetic defects (e.g. uisomy), lung aturity, foetal infection, netural tube defects (by checking acctylcholinesterase and alpha-fetoprotein level) etc.
