Why does NH3 form hydrogen bond but PH3 ...

Why does `NH_3` form hydrogen bond but `PH_3` does not?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The electronegativity of N(3.0) is much higher than that of H (2.1). As a result, N-H bond is quite polar and hence `NH_(3)` undergoes intermolecular H-bonding as shown below : In contrast, both P-H bond is not polar and hence `PH_(3)` does not undergo H-bonding.

Why does NH_(3) form hydrogen bonding while PH_(3) does not ?

Acetylene does not form hydrogen bond because :

Although Chlorine (EN = 3.2) is more electronegative than Nitrogen (EN = 3.0) , yet chlorine does not form hydrogen bond while nitrogen does. Give reason. (Ans: larger atomic size of Cl ).
