Why does nitrogen show catenation proper...

Why does nitrogen show catenation properties less than prosphorus.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The property of catenation depends upon the strength of the element-element bond. Since the N-N `(159kJ mol^(-1))` bond strength is much weaker than P-P `(213 kJ mol^(-1))` bond strenght, therefore, nitrogen shows less catenation properties than phosphorus.
