The 4d and 5d series of transition metal...

The 4d and 5d series of transition metals have more frequency metal-metal bonding in their compounds than do the 3d metals. Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In the same group of d-block elements, the 4d and 5d transition elements have larger size than that of 3d element. Thus, the valnece electrons are less tightly held and hence can form metal-metal bond more frequently .( That is why melting point of4d and 5d series as well as enthalpies of atomisationn are higher than those of 3d series ).

Three occurs much more frequently metal-metal bonding in the compounds of heavy transition elements (3d series ). Assign reason.

The compound containing metal-metal bond is

" The metallic radii of "4d" and "5d" series of transition metals are nearly the same. Why? "

The atomic radii of the metals of the third (5d) series of transitions elements are virtually the same as those of the corresponding members of the second (4d) series. Explain.

The interstitial compounds of transition metals are than the metal itself.

How will you account for the following ? (i) The metallic radii of the third (5d) series of transition metals are virtually the same as those of the corresponding group members of the second (4d) series. (ii) Lanthanoids form primarily +3 ions while actinoids usually have higher oxidation states in their compounds . Among the lanthanoids, Ln(III) compounds are predominant. However, occasionally in solution or in solid state +2 and +4 ions are obtained. Explain.
