Explain why Zn shown only `+2` oxidation state.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

E.C. of Zn `Zn = [Ar]^(18) 3d^(10) 4s^(2)` . After loss of `2e^(-)` of form `Zn^(2+)` , it acquires stable electronic configuration of `3d^(10)` ( fully -filled). Hence, it shows oxidation state of `+2` only.
