What is meant by disproportionation of an oxidation state ? Give an example

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

When in a reaction, the oxidation state of anelement in a compound increases in one of the products and decreases in the other product, it is said to undergo disproportionation of oxidation stat. For example, in acidic solution, Mn(VI) in `MnO_(4)^(2-)` changes to Mn(VII) in the product `MnO_(4)^(2-)` and to Mn(IV) in the product `MnO_(2)` . Thus, `3overset(VI)(Mn) O_(4)^(2-) + 4H^(+) rarr 2 overset(VII)(Mn) O_(4)^(-) + 2H_(2)O`
