What are barbiturates ? To which class of drugs do they belong ?

5, 5-Derivatives of barbituric acid (obtained by condensation of urea with malonic acid) are called barbiturates. They belong to the class of tranquillizers. They also act as sleep inducing agents. Some examples of barbiturates are luminal, veronal, seconal, etc.
