Explain the main functions of electric and magnetic fields in a cyclotron.

The function of the electric field in the gap between the does of a cyclotron is to accelerate the positively charged particles while that of the magnetic field in the does is to deflect the particles in semicircular path so that they return to the gap in a fixed time interval to reuse the alternating electric field.
