The neutral molecules or negatively charged anions (or rarely positive ions) which are bonded by coordinate bonds to the central metal atom or metal ion in a coordination compound are called ligands or donor groups. For example, in `[Cu(CN)_(4)]^(2-)`, four `CN^(-)` ions are ligands coordinated to central metal ion `Cu^(2+)`.
