The speed of light in water is ` 2.2 xx 10^(8)` m/s and that in glass is ` 2xx 10^(8)` m/s. What is the refractive index of (i) water with respect to water ?

`(i) ._(w)n_(g) = v_(g)/v_(w) = ( 2xx 10^(8)m//s)= 2/2.2 = 1/1.1 = 0.909` (approximately)
The refractive index of water with respect to glass = 0.909 (approximately).
(ii) ` ._(g)n_(w) = 1/(._(w)n_(g)) = 1/(1//1.1) = 1.1`
The refractive index of glass with respect to water = 1.1
