Explain the following : In cold regions in winter, the rocks cracks due to anomalous expansion of water.

Sometimes water enters into crevices of the rocks. When the temperature of the atmosphere falls below `4^(@)C` , water expands. Even when water freezes to form ice, there is increase in its volume. As there is no room for expansion, it exerts a tremendous pressure ont he rocks which crack and break up into small pieces.
