Binding energy : The minimum amount of energy required to escape a satellite from earth's gravitational influence is called its binding energy.
Consider a satellite of mass m revolving round the earth in a circular orbit at aheight h above the surface of the earth,

Let M `to` Mass of the earth `R to` Radius of the earth, `V_(c)to` Critical velocity of a satellite in the given orbit.
Potential Energy = Graviatation potential `xx` mass of satellite
`=-(GM)/((R+h))xxm`
`=-(GMm)/((R+h))`
Kinetic Energy `=(1)/(2)mv^(2)`
`=(1)/(2)m(sqrt((GM)/(R+h)))^(2)`
`=(GMm)/(2(R+h))`
Total Energy = Potential Energy + Kinetic Energy
`=-(GMm)/((R+h))+(GMm)/(2(R+h))`
`=(GMm)/((R+h))(-1+(1)/(2))`
`=-(GMm)/(2(R+h))`
`:.` Binding Energy = Total Energy
`:.` Binding Energy `=-(GMm)/(2(R+h))`
The negative sign shows that satellite is bound to the earth due to gravitationla force of attraction.
