A block of mass M is kept on as rough horizontal surface. The coefficient of static friction between the block and the surface is `mu`. The block is to be pulled by applying a force to it. What minimum force is needed to slide the block? In which direction should this force act?

The correct Answer is:
60

a The block can be moved with least effort on a rough surface `(mu)` if the force is applied at the angle of friction `(lambda)` Then is `lambda = theta = tan^(-1) mu_(s)`
That block should be pullied at the angle of friction i,e,
`theta = tan^(-1) (0.75) = 37^(@)`
b. The magnitude of external force is
`F_(min) = mg sin theta `
`= (10)(10) sin 37^(@) = (100) ((3)/(5)) = 60N `
