Electron gain enthalpy of fluorine is le...

Electron gain enthalpy of fluorine is less than that of chlorine - explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The negative electron gain enthalpy of the fluorine is less than that of chlorine. This is due to small size of fluorine atom which results in strong inter electronic repulsions in the relatively small 2p orbitals of fluorine and thus the incoming electron boes not experience much attraction.
