Among LiF and LiI, which has more covalent character and why ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

LiI has more covalent character. `F^(Θ)` ion is smaller in size as compoared to `I^(Θ)`. According to Fajans' rule, the larger-size anion `I^(Θ)` is polarised to a greater extent than small size anion, `F^(Θ)` ion. Greater polarisation of the anions leads to greater convalent character, i.e., LiI is more convalent as compound to LiF.
