A cylindrical drum, pushed along by a board rolls forward on the ground. There is no slipping at any contact. The distance moved by the man who is pushing the board, when axis of the cylinder covers a distance `L` will be.

A

`L`

B

`2 L'

C

`pi L`

D

`8 pi L`

The correct Answer is:
B

(b) Let `v_o` be the linear speed of the axis of the cylinder and `omega` be its angular speed about the axis. As it does not slip on the ground hence `omega = (v_o)/(R )`. Where `R` is the radius of the cylinder.
Speed of the topmost point is `v = v_o + omega R = 2 v_o`
Since time taken by the axis to move a distance `L` is equal to `t = L//v_o`
In the same interval of time distance moved by the topmost point is.
`S = 2 v_o xx (L)/(v_o) = 2 L`.

Consider a cylinder of mass M and radius R lying on a rough horizontal plane. It has a plank lying on its top as shown in the figure. A force F is applied on the plank such that the plank moves and causes the cylinder to roll. The plank always remains horizontal. There is no slipping at any point to contact. A man of mass 80kg pushes box of mass 20kg horizontaly. The man moves the box with a constant acceleration of 2 m//s^(2) but his foot does not slip on the ground. There is no friction between the box and the ground. There is no friction between the box and the ground. whereas there is sufficient friction between the man's foot and the ground to prevent him from slipping. Assertion:- The force applied by the man on the box is equal and opposite to the force applied by the force applid by the box on the man. Reason:- Friction force applied by the ground on the man is 200N.
