Determine whether the values given again...

Determine whether the values given against each of the quadratic equations are the roots of the quadratic equation or not :
`x^(2)+4x-5=0,x=1,-1`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
1 is the root; -1 is not the root.

Substituting x=1,
LHS `=(1)^(2)+4(1)-5`
=1+4-5
`=5-5=0=RHS`
`:.x=1` is the root of the given quadratic equation.
Substituting x=-1,
LHS `=(-1)^(2)+4(-1)-5`
=1-4-5
`=1-9=-8neRHS`
`:.x=-1` is not the root of the given quadratic equation.
