Solve the following quadratic equations ...

Solve the following quadratic equations by using formula method :
`5m^(2)-4m-2=0`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
`x=(2+sqrt(14))/(5),(2-sqrt14)/(5)` are the roots of the given quadratic equation.

`5m^(2)-4m-2=0`
Comparing with the standard form `ax^(2)+bx+c=0`,
`a=5,b=-4,c=-2`,
`b^(2)=4ac=(-4)^(2)-4(5)(-2)=16+40=56`
`x=(-bpmsqrt(b^(2)-4ac))/(2a)=(-(-4)pmsqrt(56))/(2xx5)`
`x=(4pmsqrt(4xx14))/(2xx5)=(4pm2sqrt14)/(2xx5)`
`=(2+sqrt14)/(5)`
`:.x=(2+sqrt(14))/(5)orx=(2-sqrt14)/(5)`
