An aqueous solution of a non-volatile solute boils at `100.17^(@)C`. At what temperature will the solution freeze? (Given: `K_(b) = 0.512` and `K_(f) = 1.86`)

A

(a) `-0.544^(@)C`

B

(b) `-0.512^(@)C`

C

(c ) `-0.272^(@)C`

D

(d) `-1.86^(@)C`

The correct Answer is:
C

For same solution, `(Delta T_(f))/(Delta T_(b)) = (K'_(f))/(K'_(b))`
or `Delta T_(f) = Delta T_(b) xx (K'_(f))/(K'_(b))`
or `Delta T_(f) = (0.15 xx 1.86)/(0.512) = 0.545`
Now on diluting the solution to double
`Delta T_(f) prop (1)/("wt.of solvent")`
`:. Delta T_(f) = (0.545)/(2) = 0.272`
`:. f.pt = -0.272^(@)C`
