How many collisions per second does each molecule of a gas make, when average speed of the molecule is `500m//s` and mean free path is `2.66 xx 10^(-7) m`?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

here, `upsilon = 500 m//s` and
mean free path, `lambda = 2.66 xx 10^(-7)m`
`:.` number of collisions made per second by each molecule = collision frequency
`=(upsilon)/(lambda) = (500)/(2.66 xx 10^(-7))`
`=1.88 xx 10^(9) (per sec)`.
