The rms speed of oxygen molecules at a c...

The rms speed of oxygen molecules at a certain temperature `T` is `v`. If the temperature is doubled and oxygen gas dissociates into atomic oxygen, then the rms speed

Verified by Experts

Let C and C' be the root mean square velocity of oxygen gas molecule and atomic oxygen at temperature T and T' respectively. Therefore
`C= sqrt((3RT)/(M)) = upsilon`
and `C' = sqrt((3R(2T))/(M//2)) = 2sqrt((3RT)/(M)) = 2 upsilon`
Hence the velocity of atomic oxygen will become double.
