A satellite is in a circular orbit very ...

A satellite is in a circular orbit very close to the surface of a planet. At some point it is given an impulse along its direction of motion, causing its velocity to increase `n` times . It now goes into an elliptical orbit. The maximum possible value of `n` for this to occur is

A

2

B

`sqrt(2)`

C

`sqrt(2)+1`

D

`(1)/(sqrt(2)-1)`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
B

For the satellite, initial orbital velocity, `v_(o)=sqrt((GM)/(R ))`
and its escape velocity `v_(e )=sqrt((2GM)/(R ))`
Its initial velocity is increased to `nv_(o)` but still it moves in an elliptical orbit. It will continue its elliptical motion as long as `nv_(o)le v_(e )`.
or `n sqrt((GM)/(R ))le sqrt((2GM)/(R ))` or `n le sqrt(2)` or `n_("max")=sqrt(2)`

If a satellite is orbiting the earth very close to its surface, then the orbital velocity mainly depends on

A satellite is revolving around earth in a circular orbit. At some instant the speed of the satellite is increased sqrt(2) times its orbital speed keeping its direction unchanged. Then, the new path of the satellite is :

A small satellite revolves around a heavy planet in a circular orbit. At a point in its orbit an impulse acts suddenly and instantaneously increases its kinetic energy K times without change in its direction of motion. The ratio of maximum to the minimum distance from the planet is [Assume mass of satellite is negligible small compared to that of planet]

satellite revolving in circular orbit suppose V_(0) is the orbital speed, T its time period, u its potential energy and K the kinetic energy. Now value of G is decreasesd. Then

Two satellites A and B are revolving around the earth circular orbits of radius r_(1) and r_(2) respectively with r_(1) lt r_(2) . Plane of motion of the two are same. At position 1, A is given an impulse in the direction of velocity by firing a rocket so that it follows an elliptical path to meet B at position 2 as shown. A?t position 2, A is given another impluse so that velocities of A and B at 2 become equal and the move together. For any elliptical path of the satellite of the time period of revolution is given by Kepler's planetary law as T^(2)alpha r^(3) where a is semi major axis of the ellipse which is (r_(1)+r_(2))/(2) in this case. Also angular mopmentum of any satellite revolving around the Earth will remain a constant about EArth's centre as force of gravity on the satellite which keeps it in elliptical path is along its position vector relative to the earth centre. If the two have same mass
